Song of the Week: October
Ah October. What a month. I’ve always been amused by the bizarre, registered days in the calendar and this month doesn’t disappoint. In case you weren’t aware, October is officially the month of Halloween, Oktoberfest and vegetarian awareness. But did you know it’s also popcorn popping month? And within October, we have: bald and free day, name your car day, touch tag day, count your buttons day, mincemeat day, hermit’s day and skeptics day. I’m not making these up. So play some touch tag, name your car, count your buttons, be a hermit and listen to these songs, with a healthy degree of skepticism and a bowl of mince…or veggie mince.
Jamie T – Zombie
With Halloween at the end of the month, this song’s title is rather apt. It helps that it’s a belter of a tune and a fairly good album too. I once saw this guy perform on a boat anchored on the Thames, which would definitely make the shortlist of my ‘coolest places to see a gig’, if I had such a list.
The National – Runaway
There’s a line in this song that’s been stuck in my head the entire month: ‘What makes you think I’m enjoying being left to the flood’. It took me a while to register what I liked about it so much and, although it’s a fairly nerdy reason, I think it’s because they use the progressive tense (ending with -ing). By singing ‘I’m enjoying’ instead of ‘I enjoy’, the line flows so damn well. Ok, English lesson over for today. Just enjoy the song.
FKA Twigs – Two Weeks
I’m still not sold on FKA’s Twigs debut album but this lead single is a knockout. I love how the two main chorus lines overlap, in that the second line begins as the first line is still being sung.
City and Colour – Save Your Scissors
At the retail store where I work, I’ve been put in charge of music duties. I’m enjoying the responsibility, playing DJ as countless shoppers walk through the store. But it’s also difficult to find a) enough music so us staff don’t have to hear the same song over and over again each week and b) find music that fits the brief. Luckily, I think I’ve found about 2,000 songs that work. There’s a lot of Vampire Weekend, Real Estate, Whitest Boy Alive, Beck etc. We’ve been playing my playlist for a couple months now and over time, certain songs become noticeable. This is one of those that stands out.
Todd Terje – Inspector Norse
Firstly, I’m really bummed that I missed out on tickets to Todd Terje’s upcoming set in Melbourne. I love this Norwegian DJ’s funky tunes, especially this one.
